Advocacy Alert:
Norfolk School Board to decide on PPEA
Maury High School listed as one of the Commonwealth’s Most Endangered Historic Places by Preservation Virginia
Educate. ADVOCATE. Celebrate.
NPC opposes demolition of the historic school building.
Preservation of the historic building, however, does not preclude the construction of a new modern school. The community deserves consideration of alternative options.
Built in 1911, the school is the alma mater to generations of Norfolkians. Its steps are pillars of the community – a community which has flourished around the grounds of the high school. The school has long been considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and cultural significance, and therefore, rehabilitation of the building would be eligible for the use of historic tax credits that would allow for retention of this important historic and cultural asset.
Norfolk’s civic buildings are among the best representations of the city’s architectural heritage, centuries of growth, and cultural significance; this school is one of the city’s finest examples of civic architecture.
Norfolk is home to many fine examples of adaptive reuse historic buildings that preserve the city’s unique character. Preservation also keeps building materials out of landfills, gives students tangible examples of fine art in their neighborhood, supports the local economy, and fosters the intrinsic sense of place that Norfolk’s residents enjoy. We cannot afford to compromise Norfolk’s authentic sense of place and culture. It is why we love our city, and the reason we choose to live and do business here.
NPC has expressed its continued opposition to the demolition of the historic Maury High School building. We believe there are alternative solutions that result in preservation of this iconic historic structure and neighborhood landmark.
